How to Improve Search Engine Ranking

How to Improve Search Engine Ranking

Showing up on search engines is one of the most critical ways to increase website traffic and expose your content, product or service to people who might be interested in what you have to offer. Most of the major search engines utilize an algorithm to determine where a website ranks. The search engines have set up specific criteria that a website must meet to get to the top of the list. The criteria are different for every engine, but all engines share several commonalities. It all boils down to the type and amount of content provided on a given website, the level of optimization done on the site, and the popularity of the website (link popularity/PageRank). Tailoring your website for improved search engine rankings is also known widely as search engine optimization, or SEO.

Steps

[1]. Research the keywords:Decide what search queries you want to show up for. Do some research on how many people are actually searching for your site. Many times it is best to consult a "natural search engine optimization" professional during this process. There are several tools available from Google, Overture, and third party software developers that can make the keyword research process easier.
[2]. Think outside of the box: Don't just focus on your main keywords. The first thing to realize when targeting keywords is that it is not all about ranking for the most popular keyword. The most successful search engine marketing and optimization campaigns target the most relevant keywords. For example, if you are a realtor in a particular area, don’t just optimize your site for “real estate." Optimize your site for dentist, florist, movie theaters, etc. You would be amazed how many unique visitors will come through to your site when "outside of the box" thinking occurs.
[3]. Focus on the end user: If you spend too much time trying to please the Search Engine Spiders, you may forget about the end user. Think about what your target market needs to accomplish their goals, and then put it on your site so that they can find it. The phrase "content is king" was born about 6 years ago, and it still holds true today. If you want to be relevant for specific keywords, than you need superior or at least highly competitive content. Write about 225-300 words of copy for each keyword and plant it on your site each day. Grow, grow, and grow. On average, one can target between 3-5 like keyword phrases per page. Make it as natural as possible and the Search Engines will reward you will a first page ranking.
[4]. Describe EVERYTHING: Make sure that all the pages of the site of have custom titles and descriptions. If your site is using the same tags for all the pages, you are not helping search engines figure out the subject or relevance of your individual pages. Regarding Meta Tags, there are 2 very important fields:
* Title Tag - arguably the most important SEO tag for any website. Google supports approx. 60 characters in the title, while Yahoo allows for up to 110 characters in the title. It is important to target the most critical keywords in the Title. Every page should have a unique Title.
* META Description Tag - also very important for every page on the site. Some engines do display the description defined, while others do not. All search engines do read the description tag, and do utilize the content found within in the ranking process. A good rule of thumb is to create descriptions that do not exceed 200-250 characters. The META keyword Tag is essentially useless in today's SEO market, but is often times good to utilize as a placeholder for the keywords targeted.
[5].Maintain Consistency: Keep the structure, navigation and URL structure of your site simple enough for search engines to follow. Remember that search engines cannot parse your navigation if it's using flash or javascript. So try to stay close to standard HTML when it comes to Navigation. URLs with dynamic parameters (?, &, SIDs) usually do not perform when it comes to search engine rankings
[6]. Create a site map: Create a site map that tells people where everything is on your site. You will get about a 1% click through rate to your site map. However, it will do wonders for those who know what site maps do, and the Search Engines will like it as well.
[7]. Build up your popularity: So now you have determined the right keywords on the right pages, you've created all of the necessary content; you've optimized all of the content to the best of your capabilities. Congratulations - you're now in the top 80 percentile (from an optimization standpoint) of the websites listed for the keywords you're trying to target. So how do you get a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd page listing? The answer is quite simple: You have to be the most popular, too. That's right, it's a popularity contest. In other words, how many other websites know you (link to you), and how popular are they? This is typically referred to as link popularity, or called PageRank by Google. The more sites that link to your site the better, and the more popular the site linking to you the more value you will receive for your link popularity. The best types of "link building" are directory registration, text link advertising, and press release distribution. Try to offer valuable information or tools so that other people are motivated to link to your site. Well linked sites (that don't use spamming) do better in search engines.

Tips

* Search engine algorithms assess the relevance of your page to any particular keyword by the content on your pages. For instance if you are selling "widgety widgets" on your site and you do not mention "widgety widgets" on your page text, search engines have very little to work with. Also make sure that you are not spamming search engines by using the same keyword over and over.
* Although not as important as they used to be, reciprocal links do still matter with Google. Reciprocate with similar websites and include keywords near the links on your site.
* If you want to optimize well for your city, state etc., make sure to sprinkle geographic search terms throughout. Include it in text as well as set apart. Search engines do not know where you are unless you tell them.
* Bold and italics can make your keywords stand out more with the search engines.
* Interior links within your site will improve SEO; Sitemaps are a great way to generate internal links and make your website better too!
* Correct broken links, search engines do not like dead ends.
* If you have over 30 keywords that mean business to you, then you might want to hire a Professional Search Engine Copywriting firm or outsource it to freelancers.
* Anyone who can go to google and type in "keyword research" will find very many tools that mixed with common sense should suffice quite well.
* Now when digging deeper to understand the traffic patterns of certain keywords use Wordtracker’s GTrends Tool. You can get an idea on the amount of competition on Google compared to the amount of searches. Now these numbers are far from accurate, BUT if you can kind of step back and take a broader look at things, don’t worry so much about the numbers but compare the trends since it shows the past history. See if its steady traffic, traffic that is going extinct, or traffic just starting to peak. By using this tool, you can many times find some golden opportunities.
* It really comes down to just using common sense. Just sit down and think, "What would other people search to find this? What would I search for to find this?" Try phrases in your keyword research tool to get new ideas and find the higher trafficked most targeted phrases. DO NOT look at the numbers spat back out at you by these programs as accurate numbers, they rarely are. You can still use these tools to get ideas on new keywords, search patterns of users, and many other things, that mixed with the information of trends in that area, can really help you

New Android 5.0 Lollipop Latest version will be available on LG G3 In Q4 for 2014

Android 5.0 Lollipop coming to LG G3 in Q4 2014

LG will offer the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to owners of the LG G3 smartphone sometime in the fourth quarter of 2014, with the older LG G2 receiving the update sometime later.
That's the word from a post on the LG Germany Facebook page, which doesn't offer any more details. Even if the Lollipop updater does start rolling out in the fourth quarter, it may take a while for it to reach your specific unit, thanks mostly to the fact that wireless carriers are typically in charge of when those updates are released.
If you own an LG G3 or LG G2, are you happy that you now know that you will be getting an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop at some point?

MTN Nigeria invests N2trn on network

MTN Nigeria invests N2trn on network
LOCAL CONTENT Nigerians account for 99 per cent of MTN’s over 5,800 staffers
Nigeria’s largest telecoms network, MTN, said it has invested over $13 billion (about N2 trillion) to date in fixed assets and facilities nationwide in the country. The company stated this in a document obtained by New Telegraph. The company said that its leadership position in network investment, coverage, expansion and state-of-theart infrastructure was evident in its huge investment in the Nigerian economy. As a result of the massive investment, MTN said that it has the most expansive network coverage, spread across 3,649 cities, towns and villages in all 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.
It added: “MTN also provides network coverage to 74.56 per cent of Nigeria’s land mass, while about 87.15 per cent of the population have access to MTN services. “Today, MTN is Nigeria’s leading ICT company, employing over 5,800 staff, with Nigerians accounting for 99 per cent of this number. MTN operates an extensive distribution chain with 78 trade partners and an information distribution chain of over 450 walk-in centres across Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, 100 gigabitper- second fibre optic network is being built in Nigeria for the MTN Group. Also, connectivity company, Alcatel-Lucent, said it is building a 100G DWDM/OTN network for MTN Nigeria by using its 1,830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) system. MTN plans on using the extra capacity to offer whole sale services to other providers in the region. The telco explained that its network covers 88.8 per cent of Nigeria’s land mass, and that it plans deploying the 100G network while reusing existing 10G optical assets to preserve its past investments.
“MTN realised that we needed to upgrade our network to meet customer expectations for ultra-broadband connectivity and high reliability within Nigeria’s very competitive marketplace,” said Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, in a statement. “We wanted a state of the art solution that met three main criteria: increased network reliability, a high degree of scalability to prepare the network for 400G and beyond, and preservation of our existing 10G investment,” Saint-Nwafor added

Ebola: UN launches urgent appeal for donations

Ban Ki-moon has launched another urgent appeal for funds to help fight Ebola after a United Nations drive for donations fell short of its target.
The UN chief said a $1bn trust fund he launched in September has received just $100,000 (£62,000) so far.
He joins a growing chorus of world leaders criticising the global effort to tackle the Ebola outbreak.
The disease has killed about 4,500 people so far, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Donors have given almost $400m (£250m) to other UN agencies and aid organisations directly but the UN trust fund, intended to act as a flexible spending reserve, has itself only received pledges of just $20m (£12m).
Of those countries that have pledged money to the trust fund, only Colombia has paid, giving $100,000 (£62,000).
The UN special envoy on Ebola, David Nabarro, said the fund was intended to offer “flexibility in responding to a crisis which every day brings new challenges”.
“It allows the areas of greatest need to be identified and funds to be directed accordingly,” he added.
Ban said it was time for the countries “who really have capacity” to provide financial and other logistical support.
Similar calls have been made in recent days by US President Barack Obama, UK PM David Cameron, and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.
Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has told the BBC he was “bitterly disappointed” with the international community’s response.
“If the crisis had hit some other region it probably would have been handled very differently,” he said in an interview with BBC Newsnight.
“In fact when you look at the evolution of the crisis, the international community really woke up when the disease got to America and Europe.”
The World Health Organisation has said it is “ramping up” efforts to prevent Ebola spreading beyond the three countries most affected by the deadly virus.
WHO official Isabelle Nuttall said 15 African countries are being prioritised for help in prevention and protection, with the four countries directly bordering the affected areas – Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau, Mali and Senegal – getting the most attention.
Meanwhile, President Obama has given the go-ahead for US military reservists to be deployed to West Africa if needed. They would join the 4,000 American troops already being sent to the region.
The president also said he was open to appointing someone to head the Ebola response in the US, a so-called czar.
Obama’s senior health advisors have met scathing criticism after two nurses became infected at a Texas hospital by a patient who later died.
US officials now believe one of the nurses, Amber Vinson, may have been sick and contagious for four days and flown on two flights before being diagnosed with the disease.
Disease control specialists are being sent to Ohio to help monitor people she came into contact when she flew there from Dallas last week.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital, the Commander, NNS Lugard, Commodore Shuwa Muhammed, said the product was stored in nine Geepee tanks.
He said bunkerers abandoned the boat at a marshy area along the River Niger.
Commodore Muhammed said the product would be handed over to officials of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for testing and the boat would be destroyed.
Other items recovered include two pumping machines, three Yamaha out-boat engines, three medium sized hoses, 150 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), one machete, plastic buckets, tools and five empty 25-litre Jerry cans.

Nigerian Artistes are Going into Politics for Money – Clarion Chukwurah

The veteran nollywood actress in a new interview with PUNCH described the rush, especially by Nollywood practitioners, to join partisan politics as sheer hypocrisy. According to her, some artistes want to go into politics because they are not getting much money from their vocations.
She told Punch:
The motive of those who are embracing partisan politics is purely monetary. Let us call a spade a spade. If you tell me that you want to go into politics to serve the people, I would want to look at your record first. I want to see what you have done to better the lives of the people in your immediate community. How many boreholes have you sunk in the community? How many hours of community service have you given for free over the last four or five years? How well are you known as somebody who yearns for improvement in social development?”

Jonathan decries politicisation of Ebola containment

President Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan kicked yesterday against attempts to politicise Nigeria’s success in containing the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak.
The President spoke at the launch of the Tony Elumelu Nigeria Empowerment Fund at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He said neither himself nor any governor should claim credit for the efforts of ordinary Nigerians which stopped the disease from spreading in Nigeria.
According to him, credit should rather go to every Nigerian, religious and social groups for their sacrifices with attitudes and conduct for making Nigeria Ebola-free.
Jonathan noted that such unity of purpose and compassion among Nigerians were exhibited during the fund raising, two years ago, for victims of the 2011 floods.
The President said N11 billion was still in the coffers of the floods fund.
He said the Federal Government donated N250 million to the N1.5 billion Elumelu Fund, which the promoters said would be used to revitalise the economies of post-conflict communities, like those in the Niger Delta and Jos, Plateau State.
A member of the fund and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah, called for common fora that would enable philanthropic Nigerians to connect with one another to bring succour to devastated communities.
Jonathan sad: “I’m quite pleased with what is happening because I have realised that government alone cannot solve human problems. Anything done by government, once you involve the private sector and the civil society, there is always a difference.
“The most recent one is our ability to manage Ebola. People are trying to play politics with it, which is quite unfortunate. But we had assistance from international donors; our development partners participated, in terms of giving protective gear and various suggestions.
“The Federal Government did a lot of things, in terms of logistics, moving people from one part of the country to the other, quarantining people within their homes and getting doctors or medical experts to follow up. We did not arrest anybody, moving people from Port Harcourt to Lagos for treatment and so on. A number of things were done.
“But the key thing that made the government to succeed is the buy-in by the ordinary Nigerians. When the government said we must be mindful of gatherings, of handshakes, we should not move bodies unnecessarily, even churches that I was afraid would resist because of practice of Holy Communion, having 1,000 people sharing the same cup and so on, stopped that practice within that period.
“Even the saluting by shaking people was suspended by religious organisations within that period. Nigerians became mindful; friends stopped embracing one another, saying until we get out of Ebola.
“So, it had the buy-in of the populace. Of course, that is why we succeeded so fast. Otherwise, we couldn’t have. There is no magic the government would have used to solve that problem. No President or governor would claim any credit. The credit should go to the ordinary Nigerians for their cooperation and buy-in.”
Also, Health Minister Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu has said the battle against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) may have been won in Nigeria but the war is not yet over.
Chukwu spoke in Abuja at the plenary of this year’s Summit on Women and Girl-Child Education with the theme: Reinforcing the Agenda for Girl Child Education.
The minister noted that while the global accolades Nigeria got for tackling the disease was well deserved, the country cannot afford to go to sleep on a likely new case since the scourge was still ravaging some West African countries.
He said: “I have confidence that the war against the EVD has been won (in Nigeria). But I must also warn that the preventive measures still in place should be taken seriously, as long as the disease is still ravaging some African countries and spreading beyond.”
Chukwu said the Nigerian experience at containing the scourge had amazed many, who wonder how the country subdued it, despite some lapses in the nation’s health care delivery system.
The minister added that it was an exemplary achievement worthy of replication in any Ebola-infested country.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina, said the Federal Government would continue to recognise the valuable contributions of Nigerian women and girls to the sustenance of the society.

Jonathan should declare war on Boko Haram, says Chief Falae

Chief Falae

Two eminent Nigerians spoke yesterday on the protracted insurgency in the Northeast and the alleged Federal Government’s complicity in Boko Haram’s activities.
Former Finance Minister Chief Olu Falae yesterday advised President Goodluck Joanthan to declare war on the sect.
“I have said it that if I were the President of the country, I would have declared war on Boko Haram,” he said.
The former minister spoke in Abuja with the Chairman of the Conference of Nigeria Political parties (CNPP), Alhaji Balarabe Musa, at the inaugural media briefing of the Credible Alternative Alliance (CAA).
Falae said: “There should be an opportunity for everyone to vote without fear. The government should ensure that it does not compromise. Anybody who is disrupting the election process is an enemy of the country.
“Boko Haram is not only killing people but also taking territories. I think war should be declared. We do not know who they are; we do not know if they are our citizens. So, the government should declare war on them. They are threatening the peace of the country; so, a war on them is the way out. The solution is to wipe them out. The government should not negotiate with them.”
Musa, a former Kaduna State governor, alleged that the Federal Government planned to use Boko Haram to destabilise the 2015 elections.
He said: “The solution to Boko Haram is that we should find out who is Boko Haram? Who are the people funding them? We hear that Boko Haram was founded for the purpose of the 2015 elections.
“Their plan is to make every Nigerian insecure to come out and vote. This plan will afford the ruling party the opportunity to rig the elections and declare itself the winner. It wants to make it impossible for the elections to hold so that it can continue in office.
“The 1999 constitution says that the President can only hand over to an elected President. So, if there is no election, the incumbent President can continue in office. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is colourless. You cannot predict it. The Federal Government is incompetent towards the issue of the Chibok schoolgirls.”
CAA, the duo said, is a nationwide mass democratic and electoral movement comprising political parties, political associations, civil society groups and individual Nigerians.
They said the alliance was coalescing into a democratic and electoral alliance to contest, support and promote the interest of credible and patriotic candidates for next year’s presidential elections among other elective positions.

Ebola: Texas College rejects applications from Nigeria, others

Ebola virus
A Texas institution, Navarro College, has turned down admission applications received from countries affected by the Ebola Virus Disease, the CNBC reports.
The decision, which is coming on the heels of global move towards eradication of discrimination against people affected by the disease, has already affected two Nigerians.
Kamorudeen Abidogun, a Nigerian who lives in Texas, said he received two rejection letters from Navarro, a two-year community college with a campus about 58 miles of Dallas. Abidogun has five relatives in Nigeria who applied to the school and used his home in Richmond, Texas, as a US mailing address.
The college was said to have rejected the applications, citing confirmed Ebola cases in the country as the reason for the decision.
The letter says, “With sincere regret, I must report that Navarro College is not able to offer you acceptance for the Spring 2015 term. Unfortunately, Navarro College is not accepting international students from countries with confirmed Ebola cases.”
But the college dismissed the claim, saying it only changed its ongoing foreign student admission catchment in favour of China and Indonesia.
Abidogun said his five relatives who applied to Navarro live in Ibadan, Oyo State, which has not recorded any case of EVD.
Navarro talks about the Ebola virus on the section of its website devoted to admissions information for international students, but it does not mention any policy regarding its role in the admission process.
Idris Bello, a Nigerian who lives in East Texas, tweeted a photo of the letter to bring attention to the situation. Bello, in an interview with CNBC, described the college’s purported policy “embarrassing.”
In his tweet, Bello noted the irony of the school having such a policy for foreign students when 26-year-old nurse, Nina Pham, in nearby Dallas, recently contracted the disease after treating a Liberian victim Thomas Eric Duncan.
After repeated requests for comments on the situation, Navarro’s Vice President for Access and Accountability, Dewayne Gragg, sent an email to CNBC.com.
The email reads: “Our college values its diverse population of international students. This fall we have almost 100 students from Africa. Unfortunately, some students received incorrect information regarding their applications to the institution.
“As part of our new honours programme, the college restructured the international department to include focused recruitment from certain countries each year. Our focus for 2014-15 is on China and Indonesia.
“Other countries will be identified and recruitment efforts put in place once we launch our new honours program fall 2015. We apologise for any misinformation that may have been shared with students. Additional information regarding our progress with this new initiative will be posted on our website.”
When asked for further clarification, and to answer whether in fact there had been a policy to reject students based on the presence of Ebola in their countries of origin, Gragg said, “The prior email speaks for the college.”
There have been no new reported cases of Ebola in Nigeria since Sept. 8.
Out of 20 people reported infected as a result of contact with the Liberia-American, Patrick Sawyer, who was in the country for a conference with the virus, eight died.
But the virus was successfully contained in both Lagos and Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The containment of the disease in Nigeria had attracted commendation from different parts of the world, including the United States.

Moroccan held, with daughters, for trying to join IS

Islamic State Jihadists
Islamic State Jihadists
A Moroccan man, with his two young French daughters in tow, were arrested in Casablanca Wednesday as he sought to join up with the jihadist Islamic State fighters, authorities said .
The man identified by his initials N.R., who was under police restrictions in France, was picked up at Casablanca airport, the Moroccan interior ministry said in a statement.
He was detained along with his two girls, aged two and four, and a Moroccan woman with whom he had a “traditional” marriage, said the statement, cited by the local MAPP news agency.
His legal wife, a French national, was said to have remained in France.
The arrested couple will appear in court, while no mention was made of the way the children will be handled, or whether they will be returned to France.
The man was said to have been on his way to Turkey when he was arrested.
IS fighters are involved in heavy fighting just across the Turkish border in Syria.
Over 2,000 Moroccan jihadists, including those with dual nationality, are currently fighting in Syria and Iraq, according to Rabat.
Moroccan authorities fear some will return and attempt to carry out attacks at home and has announced heightened security measures, notably at the borders.

Ebola worsening in Liberia, Sierra leone, Guinea, says WHO

A total of 4,493 people have died from the world’s worst Ebola outbreak on record, and the situation in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone is deteriorating, the World Health Organization said.
WHO said a total of 8,997 confirmed, probable and suspected cases of Ebola had been reported in seven countries as of Oct. 12, with the vast majority of these in the three West African nations.

In Spain and the United States, a handful of healthcare workers are ill, while Senegal and Nigeria appear to have prevented further spread of the disease, the WHO said.
“It is clear…that the situation in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is deteriorating, with widespread and persistent transmission of (Ebola),” the WHO report stated.
In Guinea 843 people have died of the disease and an increase in new cases was driven by a spike in infection in the coastal capital Conakry and the nearby district of Coyah.
In Liberia, the U.N. health agency said that problems with data gathering made it hard to draw conclusions about the evolution of the epidemic, with the number of cases in the capital Monrovia almost certainly significantly under-reported.
The United States is deploying up to 4,000 troops to West Africa to help contain an outbreak of the haemorrhagic fever with the bulk of the effort targeting Liberia.

Football: Keshi, Nigerian coach sacked

Keshi: sacked by NFF

Keshi: sacked by NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sacked Stephen Keshi, coach of the country’s national team, the Super Eagles.
The Cable reports that the decision was made Wednesday night by the executive committee of the newly constituted Nigeria Football Federation, at a meeting at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
Keshi, will now be replaced by Shaibu Amodu, a former coach of the team. He will be supported by Salisu Yusuf, Gbenga Ogunbote and Aloysius Agu. Garba Lawal, a former player will serve as the team ‘s coordinator.
Amodu as a caretaker coach, will take charge of the team for the last two matches in the qualifying round for the 2015 African Cup of Nations.
Keshi’s three-year contract with NFF actually expired at the end of the World Cup in Brazil, where he led the team to the second round of the competition, just after winning the African Cup of Nations.
The team have had a run of bad results since then, losing to Sudan and Congo in the Group A qualifiers and drawing with South Africa. The team rccorded a 3-1 victory over Sudan in Abuja on Wednesday.
But the NFF executives did not seem to be impressed to give Keshi a new contract, more so since Keshi had boasted that he has several African countries waiting to hire him.

Social Media Awash With Eagles’ Praises After Sudan’s Fall

Nigerians showed Wednesday’s evening that though they might be angry, they always want their team to produce good results as at and when due.
The feeling of most Nigerians on social media during and after the Super Eagles’ 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan that ended 3-1 was that their darling team did a good job to put the country’s hope of defending the AFCON title back on track.
A brace from Ahmed Musa and a goal from debutant from Chinese league, Aaron Samuel ensured that Stephen Keshi’s Eagles earned three points and first victory since the qualifying series started.
It also ensured that Nigeria move into third spot in Group A on four points. Salah Ibrahim Jizoli scored Sudan’s only goal of the grudge encounter at the Abuja Stadium.
On Twitter, @ogujohnugo hailed the Eagles for a job well done. “Congrats to the Boys for a Job well done…Congrats to Nigeria..Let us Keep praying for the country football instead of the evil talks. I am just urging us to learn how to believe and support our nation in any major tournament,” he tweeted.
Super Eagles out-of-favour midfielder Sunday Mba commended the team on his @mba_sunday account: “Hard times are not forever happy day is here again. Up SuperEagles.”

SuperSport journalist, @samywejinya wrote: “These are the Super Eagles we know and love. The Abuja fans cheering the Eagles…I can’t believe I am almost shedding tears of joy”. @KayodeAkintemi was rather impressed with diminutive Ahmed Musa’s finishing: “Musa’s brace makes it Nigeria 3-1 Sudan. Musa’s second goal is a personal effort that showed tenacity and determination. Beautiful goal,” he tweeted.
Complete Sports’ @NurudeenObalola was however cautious about the victory. “Good Eagles win, but there’s still a whole lot of work to be done. Happy with the result but with not the performance. Long way to go.”
For @oluwashina, the race to Morocco 2015 is alive. “The Super Eagles have clawed three points in Abuja to get their #AFCON2015Q back on ‘track’.”
SuperSport’s @ColinUdoh tweeted: “It was edgy sometimes, but the #SuperEagles showed grit to keep their hopes alive.”, adding that “Keshi was pilloried for inviting a player from China. That player (Aaron) has been among the most impressive, with a goal to his boot.”
@tunde3510 hailed Musa for keeping to his pre-match boast that he would score goals to celebrate his birthday. “Man of his words Ahmed Musa…he said he will score today as birthday gift and It happened….hmmmm.”
When Musa scored the first goal, an elated Abuja-based sports journalist, Aniete Iyoho responded with a tweet @AnnyIyoho: “GOAL: Ahmed Musa sends the crowd into ecstasy but it’s Mikel who did all the work for this opener. Nigeria 1-0 Sudan. #SoarSuperEagles.”
Deji Tinubu, former board member of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF in the administration of erstwhile President Aminu Maigari found words to described Musa’s first goal as he tweeted @dejitinubu: “Well taken goal. Mikel drove and slipped it to Musa who took the pass in between his markers and tucked it away from the keeper in one swoop !”
@iykeharris, however, wants embattled Coach Stephen Keshi, who must be relieved having bagged all three points to thank Musa. “Keshi must follow Musa home to thank him for stopping the stones from being hurled.”

US to be ‘more aggressive’ in monitoring Ebola, says Obama

President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama
United States President Barack Obama on Wednesday pledged a “much more aggressive” response at home to the Ebola threat, and insisted that the risk of a serious outbreak on US soil was low.
After a crisis meeting with top aides at the White House, Obama underlined the importance of helping African countries stem the spread of the virus, calling such aid “an investment in our own public health.”
“If we are not responding internationally in an effective way… then we could have problems,” Obama said in comments aired on US television.
The meeting — attended by Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, among others — came after a second US Ebola infection was diagnosed at a Texas hospital where a Liberian man died a week ago.
Obama said meeting participants discussed “monitoring, supervising, overseeing in a much more aggressive way exactly what’s taking place in Dallas” to ensure those lessons are “transmitted to hospitals and clinics all across the country.”
“This is not a situation in which, like a flu, the risks of a rapid spread of the disease are imminent,” Obama said, adding he “shook hands with, hugged and kissed” nurses who had treated an Ebola patient at Emory University hospital in Atlanta.
“They followed the protocols. They knew what they were doing and I felt perfectly safe doing so,” he said.
“I am absolutely confident that we can prevent a serious outbreak of the disease here in the United States… The key thing to understand about this disease is that these protocols work.”
The White House said Obama had canceled plans to visit Rhode Island and New York on Thursday so he could follow up on the Ebola meeting.
So far, Ebola has killed nearly 4,500 people, the vast majority of them in West Africa, where the outbreak began early this year.
Since the announcement last month that the United States would send at least 3,000 troops to West Africa to help fight the outbreak, Obama has repeatedly criticized the international response to the health crisis as insufficient

6.4m Nigerian adults are exposed to tobacco smoke – Senate

Senate President, David Mark
Senate President, David Mark
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa (PDP-Delta) said on Wednesday that statistics had shown that about 6.4 million Nigerians were exposed to tobacco smoke in restaurants while 5.6 per cent used its products.
This was announced by Okowa at a public hearing to consider the harmonised National Tobacco Control Bill (Senate Bill) 2012 and 2014 Executive Bill.
Okowa, who attributed the statistics to the 2012 Global Adult Tobacco Survey, further disclosed that about 600,000 people die annually globally from second hand tobacco smoke.
He said it was in view of the alarming negative effect of tobacco on peoples’ health that the Senate decided to hold a public hearing.
According to him, the bill will provide the legal framework for the control of production, manufacture, sale, labelling and advertising, promotion, sponsorship and use of tobacco products and exposure to tobacco smoke.
The chairman further said the bill would provide for the prohibition of advertising, promotion and sponsorship as well as regulation of tobacco products.
“The bill we are considering today provides for health warnings and other information required on tobacco product packaging.
“It further provides for the protection of tobacco policies from commercial and vested interest of the industry as well as education and communication and public awareness as it relates to Nigerian public,” he said.
The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, while declaring the public hearing open, said the bill would help protect future generation of Nigerians from the devastating health consequences.
He also said it would protect Nigerians from social, economic and environmental consequences of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke amongst others.
Mark said that anything with adverse effect on public health such as effect of tobacco, deserved the right awareness and attention.
“The statistics surrounding the impact of tobacco in the world at large and in Nigeria in particular, is staggering, a seemingly slow-killer that must not be ignored.
“Much to the contribution of the negative effect of tobacco and tobacco products in the country is the illegal production.
“Also the distribution and advertising of the product by many vendors lead to the cause of many diseases and untimely death of many Nigerians.
“This gathering has an onerous task of assessing issues not limited to just tobacco distribution, sale, advertising, manufacture and sponsorship.
“But also issues like age restriction and penalties, effects of second-hand smoke both on children and adults smoking in public places and implementation of these regulations hereafter,” he said.
He said, as a member of World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and by adopting treaty on Tobacco Control, the Nigerian Government and National Assembly had to live up to the mandate.
Mark added that the Nigerian Government and National Assembly would ensure that the adverse effects and burden of tobacco and its products on public health system was sustainably controlled.
“We must understand that for this bill to be sustained, it needs more than government backing. We must shun illegality in this business sector in its entirety.
“Our customs, judicial system and relevant health agencies have to be on deck to provide succour where and when needed,” he said.
He enjoined all stakeholders at the hearing to contribute gainfully, to help the Senate Committee on Health to arrive at a more informed and conclusive decision

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State
Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, has restated the readiness of government to hand over grant aided schools to proprietors who expressed the desire to wholly run the schools.

Yahaya said that through dialogue, much would be achieved in sustaining peace in the state, adding that rumour should not be allowed to foster.

Gunmen kill nursing mother in Bauchi

Bauchi-There was pandemonium and wailing, Monday night, in the Igbo community in Bauchi State following the murder of a popular business woman by gunmen. The deceased, Mrs Loricia Onukwu, who was nursing a two months old baby, was shot dead by gunmen in front of her house at Fadama Mada area in Bauchi metropolis.
It was gathered that the gunmen, who were two in number, accosted Loricia, a nursing mother of four just as she arrived her house after closing from her business located in the area as a hybrid dealer at about 7 pm on Monday evening and horned for her children to open the gate.
Her second son, 10 year old Makochwuwku, had just opened the gate for his mother to drive her Opel car inside the compound when he saw two men carrying gun walking towards his mother’s car. They shot her twice through the windscreen and made way with her handbag after demanding for money.
The husband who has since relocated his family including his two months old baby to GRA in Bauchi, could not be reached at the time of sending this report as he was said to have gone to the Tafawa Balewa Housing Police Station with his son Makochuwku.
“The husband Leo was not at home. He went to church. They were shouting ‘where is the money, where is the money’ before they shot her at close range,” one of the women leader in Loricia’s church who pleaded anonymity said.
She described Loricia, an indigene of Ideato Local Government Area of Imo State as a very friendly and clam woman who “loved everybody, always cracking jokes, always happy . If you are upset and you meet her, you will become happy. I don’t know why anyone would kill such person. I have never heard of a woman being killed like that. Loricia never told us she had problem with anyone. It is simply painful and a mystery”
She said that the deceased was planning to dedicate her baby on Novermber 9 but all her plans and dreams have been cut short.
The Christain woman leader explained: “We fixed second Sunday of November for the dedication at Our KLady of Loreto Caothlic Church Fadama Mada parish and she was excited about it. She talked about it all the time as we almost concluded arrangements the dedication of her baby. She called me to inform me that she had booked for the reception at Chaba Hotel and we made arrangement for coking only to hear news that she was killed. It is sad”
An Igbo leader in state who also pleaded anonymity decried the killing of Loricia saying her brutal death has thrown her family and the Igbo community to great mourning .”Her death brings to four the number of Igbos killed in Bauchi. Her own is sad because she is a woman. We implore the police to bring the killers to books”
When contacted , the Spokesman of the police command in Bauchi State DSP Mohammed, told our reporter that he heard about the incident but has little details. He promised to give more detail about the killing as soon as he get them

Keshi says countries waiting to hire him

Stephen Keshi
Again, coach Stephen Keshi has said that he has several countries waiting to hire him should he be asked to quit by Nigeria.
Keshi has come under heavy criticisms as his team have recorded a mere point from an available nine in the AFCON 2015 qualifiers.
The former Eagles captain, who is on the job without a contract, told AfricanFootball.com, “It’s not about the game, it’s about other personal stuff. So, if tomorrow they say Keshi leave, there is no shaking because other two, three countries are waiting (for me).
“My job is about hire and fire.
“Right now I have been to other places I have coached before I have not been fired. If it comes down to Nigeria, I have been here before, qualified Nigeria for 2002 World Cup with Amodu Shaibu, we were asked to leave.”
Keshi has also handled Togo and Mali.
And recently his agent claimed oil-rich Gabon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea have tabled offers for him. The Nigerian coach has said many times that he had offers and Nigerians are bewildered why he has not taken any of the several offers rather than hanging on with the Nigerian team without a contract.

Ayo Fayose
Ayo Fayose

The political crisis in Ekiti State has heightened   with the Governor-elect, Ayo Fayose, calling on the residents of the state to ignore the curfew imposed by outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi.
Fayose, who arrived in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday afternoon   amid   jubilation by his supporters, made the call while featuring on a live radio and television interview monitored on Nigerian Television Authority.
Fayemi had on September 26   said “there would be no movement between the hours of 7pm   and 7am every day till further notice.”
The outgoing governor had explained that the curfew was necessitated by the widespread violence that greeted the   murder of a former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Omolafe Aderiye, by gunmen.
During the interview, Fayose said residents should go about their normal business because the curfew had brought untold hardship to them.
Fayose said, “It is unfortunate that people have been put under needless pressure and I have discussed with the police and the army on the need to let people move around freely.”
“I have spoken with the security agencies on the need to allow people to move freely. As from today, I have released people to go about freely. There is no more curfew.
“No security agent will arrest you. Anyone who is harassed or arrested should call me.”
Fayose gave out a mobile line that people could call him on to secure their release if arrested. The governor, who   promised to personally seek the release of anyone arrested by law enforcement agencies, also likened the alleged last-minute efforts by the All Progressives Congress and the Ekiti-11 to stop his October 16 inauguration to the last kick of a dying horse.
He said the outgoing government would leave a debt profile of nearly N84bn for his administration.
“They took N31bn in the first instance and paid about N10bn and they took another N22bn loan and the state is having N552m monthly deficit and the repayment is till 2020,” he said.
On the purported suit at a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday by the APC and the E-11   to stop his inauguration on Thursday, Fayose said God’s will would prevail no matter the circumstances.
He said, “Everything will work for good for me and the people of Ekiti State. The case filed in Lagos today(Tuesday); we have found out their antics and I am confident that I would be inaugurated.
“I am currently enjoying God’s grace and kindness which I did not merit. I will work with everybody even within and outside the party.
“This is a rare second chance and I will consult widely with everybody before taking policy decisions.
“You people of Ekiti State saw me that I am not a professor before you voted for me. Those making frantic efforts to go against the will of the people will not succeed. Their efforts is like the last kick of a dying horse and we will triumph.”
The governor-elect   added that he had not enjoyed the support of the state government on the arrangement for his inauguration.
He said, “I called Governor Fayemi last week and I told him that the people that will set up the canopy at Government House grounds will arrive today (Tuesday) but Fayemi said no. He said I should write through a permanent secretary and I said no problem. The reception will hold at the Trade Fair Complex in Ado-Ekiti.”
Fayose also pleaded with workers in the state to suspend the industrial action and join his incoming government in developing the state.
He lamented that government had neglected the welfare of the people by owing them salaries and not remitting deductions to their cooperative accounts.
Efforts by The PUNCH to speak with the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, on Fayose’s call on the people to ignore the curfew and his claim that the government was not prepared for his inauguaration proved abortive.
He did not answer calls placed to his phone by 7pm.
A text message sent to him by 8.14 pm was also not responded to as of press time.
Meanwhile, judiciary workers in the state on Tuesday defied the order of the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodele Daramola, to reopen the courts in the state.
Daramola, acting on   the National Judicial Council instruction on Monday had directed the reopening of the courts which he shut down on September 25.
The CJ had closed the courts   following attacks on   Justices Olusegun Ogunyemi and John Adeyeye by political thugs.
But the state chapter of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria whose members are currently on strike with other civil servants   over the non-payment of their two months’ salary arrears refused to resume for duties at the courts.
When our correspondent visited the premises of the Ekiti State High Court and the Court of Appeal, security personnel, including soldiers and riot policemen were   on guard.
They barricaded the double lane that links Fajuyi Park with Basiri area in the capital city.
The Ekiti Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which earlier adjourned till Tuesday could not sit as a result of the development.
When contacted, the JUSUN Chairman, Mr. Niyi Ogundare, was hostile.   Instead of answering the questions posed to him, he replied with questions.
Excerpt of the encounter:
Your members didn’t resume today (Tuesday) against the directive of the CJ , may we know why sir?
Were you there today (Tuesday)?
Yes sir.
And you didn’t see them in their office?
Yes sir.
Maybe they are on leave.
I’m speaking with you officially as the JUSUN chairman sir because they are your members.
Then report it in your paper that you didn’t see anybody.
But the Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Babayemi, said the continued presence of armed personnel at the courts   was in accordance with the advice of the NJC to the Acting Inspector General of Police that adequate security be provided for judges and court workers.
He said, “Please note that the courts have re-opened as you do know. however the police presence at the courts is to provide security and not to prevent people from going in and out of the courts.
“The locked gate is by the striking workers and not by the police, please.”
